As a student at St. Anthony's Elementary School, my teacher, a nun, was crazy about Notre Dame football and took the eighth grade class to meet you at what I thought was the Rose Bowl practice session just before the Jan. 1, 1957 Rose Bowl game. I have a picture with you and me and also one with Captain Jim ______ but checking the internet it does not look like Notre Dame played in that Rose Bowl game???? No one believes me about the picture with you but I wrote on it and carried it in my wallet for years so I know it is you. I'm 69 now and a grandmother who would like to pass this picture on to my grandsons. What do you think? Pam K

Paul, I tihnk you and I began the tradition of Packers riding kids bikes to the practice field. One of my best memories is of the time you came out of the locker room, running a little behind, pointed to my red Schwinn bike leaning against the chain link of Lambeau Field and asked to take it to the practice field. You told me you'd leave it at the corner of the field (which you did). rsborman@charter.net

Hey Paul: I've been a Notre Dame fan ALL of my life (64 yrs old) & deeply wanted to go there. A lot of people helped me but not in the cards because of a low SAT and not quite a B average, but I gave it my best shot, (ironically I went to UMiami). Question, I go out to South Bend every year, in fact, I've seen you. I know how you must feel about your Alma Mater, believe me...I've heard, as of the 1980's, you have given approximately $500,000 in alumni contributions. Just how much have you?..You need not be modest, it speaks well!I know, I'm Catholic too! (eg. Our Blessed Lord said, "Don't let your left hand know!") Just wanted to ask....THAT says how you feel,Paul, I know. I NEVER GET TIRED O' GOIN OUT THERE! Anyway, looking forward to this season, hope to see you out there sometime. I've met MANY, MANY class people there & would have a long time explaining..Lujack, Moon Mullins, Tripucka, Ross Browner, John Panelli, Angelo Bertelli, Tom Banks, Chris Smith, and (a tear), Tom Pagna.......What a wonderful place. She will ALWAYS remain with me, and I'll always come out. I've often said my two favorite places on earth are The Grotto and the Ring of Kerry at Dingle Peninsula. Anyway, take care, God bless you always.....Yours in Notre Dame...."Love thee, Notre Dame!" Michael.

Hi, my name is jason. My dad recently passed and I acquired his lifetime collection of packers memorabilia. I too am part of it. For my middle name is vincent. I just wanted to let you know that you and bart and fuzzy were big part in my dads life. He's only met fuzzy thurston personally, but you gave him inspiration and hope that there was a giant chzhead in the sky for him. I have many autographed photos, but the one I like the most came straight off of fuzzy thurston's wall at his bar in green bay. The picture consists of bart starr in the backround. You running the ball and fred blocking for you. Its hard to read some of the writing, but I thinks it says to the biggest packer fan jeff, best wishes fuzzy thurston. I would be honored if you could sign it too. I promise it won't be sold. I don't plan on selling any of his stuff. As a matter of fact. I'm still in the process of hanging all his stuff back up on the walls of my place. It would mean a great deal to me if you could and I'm sure to him too. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I'm looking forward to a response. My email address is jasonburrell8485@gmail.com

How nasty were these guys? Your own Ray Nitchske, Bill George, Joe Schmidt, Don Paul, Dick Butkus,Bill Bishop,George Connor, and Ed Sprinkle. Almost forgot Nighttrain Lane. No zone coverage back then. Thanks: Jim

Asked on: February 24, 2012, 5:17 pm

In Ray Nitschke's autobiography "Mean On Sunday", he defended himself at length about the accusation of being a dirty player. Nitschke claimed that he was inspired to play all-out, even in practice, by the example of Jimmy Taylor. This exuberance didn't always sit well with fellow Packers, as noted by you, Jerry Kramer, and Gary Knafelc. Nitschke hurt Jim Ringo in practice before a crucial game, although he noted the defense was being egged on by Lombardi to hit their teammates harder.

In your autobiography, you wrote that Nitschke broke your friend Rick Casares' ankle on purpose during a game against the Bears. This would appear to be a very dirty play. You also portray him later backing out of fight with a healthy Casares, which seems cowardly.

My question is: Was Nitschke regarded as a dirty player by his fellow Packers? And was he regarded as a dirty player by the rest of the league?

Dear Mr Hornung,

I grew up in Louisville, Manual High School '64, but have not been back for several years. As a boy I recall watching professional wrestling occasionally on local TV, probably WAVE channel 3. It was very simple, small-time wrestling compared to what it is now. My question: Did Bart Starr ever try professional wrestling in Louisville during the off season or was I just dreaming?

Asked on: July 19, 2011, 6:06 pm

Paul, I just want to say thanks for all you have done. I read your book about 5 years ago in 1 afternoon. The first game I can remember watching was either the 1st or second Super Bowl so I have been a Packers fan since 66 or 67. I was born in 1960. So I can not ever remember you playing but I have seen all your highlights. I feel so proud that your from Louisville. Bart was my man then of course Brett and now Arron.I came to Damon\'s when you had Brett on your show. I just can not get over Brett.I want him to play again this season but I finally know it is time for him to retire. I feel so bad for him concerning last season and everything he had to go through. It simply kills me that he has to suffer with the thoughts that he threw the INT\'s in the Packers-Giants and then the Vikings-Saints NFC Championship games .Well at least he won 1 Super Bowl. When I feel too bad for him I think of Marino who has 0 Super Bowls and that Brett is also probably worth 100 million.I wanted to kill Fran Tarkenton when he was saying a bunch of crap about Brett when the Vikings fist signed him.I hope you do not hold this against me but my heart had me rooting for the Vikings the last 2 years. I went to the last two Vikings-Packers games in Lambeau. I took Rusty Jones who is Larry\'s son. It was his first time going to Lambeau and he loved it. I had been trying for 30 years to get Rusty to go. Now I will shut up and ask my question. Did you agree with Ted Thompson\'s & McCathy\'s decision to let Brett go or what would you have done if you were GM of the Packers and had to make that decision? LOL, I am watching the NFL channel as I write this and just saw that you and Jim Taylor were the #1 running back duo. I had seen this before. Hey, you through a good block. Paul, I know you have had a great life, congratuations. Thanks, Steve Logsdon PS Skeet has a Green Bay helmet and footbal that she was going to ask you and Bart to sign before he could not make your event. I told Rusty to tell Skeet to hang on to items in hopes that Bart will come next year. Oh and I became a hard core Packers fan again as soon as the Vikings were done.

Paul,

I guess this is more of a comment than a question, but I wanted you to know that my 8-year-old son (Sam) is joining a youth football league later this summer and participants have the opportunity to select their own jersey number. He has seen highlight films of you, heard me speak about you, heard my father speak about you, etc., etc., and he has chosen #5 for his number. While other kids talk about Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews, he talks about "Paul Hornung." Since he was born deaf in one of his ears, I don't know that he will ever be a pro athlete, but he certainly aspires to be like you, Paul.

Paul:
I played football for 22 years in school and in semi-pro. I played various offensive and defensive positions but I was also the kicker (straight-on square toed) every season that I played. I used you as an example of being an all around football player and when I began coaching I stressed your accomplishments (on the field) as an example to all of my young players. Last night I showed my 16 year old son who plays both ways on his high school team and who also kicks (straight on), a picture of you following through on a field goal kick in the 1961 NFL championship game. I told my son that this is what you should look like when you have kicked the ball perfectly. It's a great picture (from the book Seven. I also have your books and When Pride Still Mattered and an NFL football autographed by you after your induction into the HOF.)

Please encourage my son to continue to work on his kicking game.

Thank you from a big fan of Paul Hornung and the Lombardi Packers.

Hello Paul. I have a question that no Packer historian can answer. Maybe you can help...What color were the 1958 Packer uniforms that you wore during the regular season (not pre-season)? Lore has it that since the Packers were 1-10-1, Scooter McLean had the uniforms burned after the season. No colored pictures seem to exist anywhere. We believe that the home jersey was green with white trim, pants were white with green trim, helmet was white with green strip...away jersey was white with green trim, pants and helmet same as home. Do you agree? Do you know of any photo that may exist?
Thanks for you help with this. I have been an avid Packer fan since the 50's.

Paul,
I have an old Packer jersey from the 1960's with your number on it.
I received it from someone who said he was an assistant equipment manager for
the Packers during that time. Your number had been sewn over Max McGee's
number 85. Legend has it that you stole Max's jersey as a joke and then took
his number off and sewed your number over it.
I have kept this jersey for the last 30 some years, and even wore it when
at times when playing football. Could you verify this story for me, and if
indeed it is true, could I get you to autograph it?

Perhaps if this is a true story, the Packer Hall of Fame might be interested
in displaying this jersey along with the story as you remember it.

I look forward to hearing from.

Dear Mr. Hornung,

My company is about to move into a building in Milwaukee\'s Menomonee River Valley that comes with a curious story that we are reaching out to you to substantiate.

The building was part of the former Wisconsin Gas Light West Side Works complex located between along the North bank of the Menomonee River and immediately east of 27th Street along Interstate 94.

For many years, after being gutted of it\'s coal gassification infrastructure, the red brick building apparently sat idle.

That\'s where a possible connection to you comes in.

Do you recall ever having pre-game meetings, walkthroughs, or personal practice sessions in a long, tall and relatively narrow warehouse building on any of your homegames that were played at Milwaukee\'s County Stadium?

Many images of the building ... new and old ... can be found at the following photo-sharing link that our firm has set up online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/55128752@N07/sets/72157625242686037/show/

I know it\'s a long-shot ... but, it would be a story we\'d love to pass along to our guests ... if it turns out to be true.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mr. Hornung: Have you done any genealogy on the Hornung side? Do you know where your ancestors were before Kentucky? We share a very uncommon last name (less than 5,000 in the world) and I always wondered if we were related. I was able to trace my great-great Grandfather to Bieber, Biebergemünd, Germany and the surrounding area is "Hornung Country". He migrated in 1846 to Pennsylvania, but, some relatives went to Buffalo and Ohio.

I always thought that Chuck Mercein should have gotten a lot more credit for winning the Ice Bowl - he had some marvelous plays at the very end of the game. What a legendary win. I know by then you were with the Saints (ugh!), but I saw you on the bench in "civilian clothes" sitting next to Bart Starr in some of the Ice Bowl footage. Enough babbling for now.

Asked on: October 17, 2010, 2:05 am

Paul,

Nice to talk to a player who played "when it was a game" and not the shadow said has become today, my opine. To me GB is STILL the greatest 'team' ever (they're my second favorite ever behind my Chiefs; I also liked the Raiders & Chargers - emphasis on 'liked' because for me football today just doesn't measure up to yesteryear (I'm only 54 but old enough to have seen best then & now; substance today is sadly lacking.)

Now the bad news... I'm also an old American Football League fan, 1960-1969; you probably guessed that. Despite that I believe BALT beat themselves SB 3 moreso than did the Jets (feel that if they played each other 10 games then BALT would've perhaps won 7; while KC's win over MIN SB 4 was more decisive, MIN beat KC handily the regular season rematch later that same year. Perhaps both cases the "on any given day any team can win" adage?)

My question: in SB 1 what in your opinion was the difference? Could KC have won based on their 'talent' level? I know CB's Mitchell and Williamson were not so hot, but supposedly KC had the bigger, stronger, faster team OVERALL according to reports.

It was essentially a draw after the 1st half, and in fact shy a missed FG KC would have actually taken a 10-7 lead, GB's only TD Starr & McGee's 'once in a lifetime' answered prayer at that point. Beyond blitzing 2nd half & Wood's INT return I've heard KC wasn't as well-conditioned & they lost their poise. Your thoughts on these particulars I've mentioned or any others appreciated.

Mr Hornung,

Do you ever get to Orlando, Fl? Would love to have an opportunity to see you and have you sign my Notre Dame helmet. Thanks for your time!

Paul,
It was great to see you again at the Collectors' Showcase of America in March 2010 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia. How did you and other Packer Greats get invited to these autograph events? One thing I will do next time is great my tickets early. My apologizes for getting your autograph 'behind the curtains.' I do appreciate you taking the time. Later on I met Dave Robinson, Tom Brown, Forrest Gregg and especially Willie Wood. It was good to see Willie getting out and about. Tom Brown did comment how the signatures all of your generation of Packers are readable compared to those of the current generation of Packers.
Okay, one last question...How do you think the Packers will do this year?
Best regards,
Scott

Hi Paul Hornung,
I just discovered your website, and it is really something. I just finished reading the book about Coach Lombardi's first season with the Packers. It said in there you thought to yourself that "I am the last one on the bench on the worst team in the league." That was the season before Lombardi came.
And then look what happened. How close were you to thinking you may not have a career in pro football?
I enjoyed reading your blog, made me feel like connecting with an old friend.
Wishing you good health.

Paul,
Who was the meanest linebacker in our era?

Paul, I am 45 years old and have been a fan of yours since I was a little boy. When I played backyard football the other guys always said "I'm Staubach or I'm Dorsett" but I ALWAYS said "I'm Hornung!" I am constantly amazed by your overall skills as a blocker, runner, passer and kicker. No one in todays game can come close to what you accomplished in 12 games a season. You are a class act and I hope to meet you next time you are in Madison. Any chances? Best wishes always! Jim Hoard

i watch Imus in the Morning - saw the generous gifts you gave for him for Imus Ranch. He also mentioned you had included "Go Ford" in your letter.
I forwarded that info to Alan Mulally, Ford's CEO. Are you a fan of Ford vehicles or their stock??

Mr. Hornung...my son is 24 years old. He cannot look at pro football players
today and see any of them who coincide with his opinion of a "role model". I
suggested that he read up on you and your career. He was very impressed
with the fact that you were an all around player who played for the love of the game without the benefit of any performance enhancing drugs. Any chance of you being in the Northwest Indiana area any time soon?

Paul, I know you beat Woodson in the 100 yard dash. Were you ever clocked in the 100 in high school or college?

Paul,

Would you consider the 1979 Cotton Bowl the most unbelievable comeback ever? I remember you did the game with Lindsey Nelson. So much has been said about the game. It seems they keep coming up with little side notes just to add to the mystique.

Thanks,

Neil

Mr. Hornung, My brother went to Notre Dame in the 1960's and was on an interhall football team. A picture taken of him in the team's uniform was one of his prize possessions; he took it with him to Vietnam and it was somehow lost. I am wondering if you could manage to get one of the helmets from N.D. so that I could surprise him with it this Christmas. I would gladly pay whatever N.D. would charge for it. My brother suffers from many ailments associated with his military service and this would give him a wonderful lift. Thank you.

Paul, What is the official status of your No 5 being retired. My comment on that would be if anyone deserves a Number being retired you do, with all the scoring you did.

Hi Paul. Will you have your booth and be doing book signings at the next Rosemont, IL show in Nov '09? If so, would I be able to buy the book and get a helmet signed? Or do you have different prices for getting other items autographed? Thanks for your time.

Was wondering the name of the TV show you did on TBS back in the early 1980's about Football. I remember you and a few other guys previewing the upcoming Sunday games on a Saturday night? Lots of joking and laughter on the set sticks out in my mind. Thanks.

Paul, you had a great career as a quarterback at Notre Dame. Were you disappointed that you couldn't play QB in the NFL, or did you favor the move to halfback? Very nice website, by the way. You remain a great ambassador for the Packers and the NFL.
